A storage system has no resource of its own: every euro of revenue comes from deciding when to charge, when to discharge and in which market to stand. Two identical batteries in identical locations earn very different revenues.

And the decision is not only about price. Every cycle consumes useful life, and the state of charge constrains what can be offered in the following hour.

• Baseline from arbitrage. A minimum is guaranteed from base arbitrage; above it, transparent sharing.
• Degradation in the objective function. Cycle cost and state of charge enter the decision; they are not a constraint bolted on afterwards. A cycle only happens if it pays for what it costs.
• Capacity and energy in mFRR and aFRR. A battery is the best-paid asset in system services. That is where most of the value is, not in arbitrage.
• Contractual availability commitments respected. Where a reserve or autonomy commitment exists, it is fixed by contract and optimisation works only above it.

A battery placed beside a solar or wind plant, on the same grid connection point, is a different problem from a standalone battery. The decision becomes joint: how much to inject, how much to store, how much to offer as reserve — with the plant’s own output uncertain.
